Buenos Aires Police Dismantles 'Polo Gang' Specializing in Bank Robberies

The City Police, following 13 raids, dismantled 'The Polo Gang,' a sophisticated criminal organization dedicated to bank robberies. During the operations, five of its members were arrested, and ten cars, half a kilogram of pure gold, and thousands of dollars were seized. The investigation, led by the Detachments and Highways Division, began on July 22 in Villa Lugano, when thieves stole a backpack containing over $5 million from a motorist on the Dellepiane and Larrazábal highway. The National Prosecutor's Office for Criminal and Correctional Matters No. 26, headed by Marcelo Munilla Lacasa, ordered the identification of the vehicles involved, and film recordings from Urban Highways (AUSA) made it possible to establish that the victim had been followed by a Volkswagen Polo and several high-displacement motorcycles. According to the police report sent to the Noticias Argentinas agency, the analysis of the cameras showed that the robbery was prepared at a gas station located on the main Dellepiane route, where the group's members distributed the cars and motorcycles that later participated in the surveillance of the victim until the moment of the assault. 'The investigators also went to the Urban Monitoring Center (CMU), where the cameras confirmed that the group acted in an organized manner, detecting victims in the micro-district after carrying out banking operations and following them to carry out the robbery,' they highlighted. During the investigation, the vehicle was geolocated using a GPS device authorized by the Justice, which allowed establishing movements and addresses linked to the suspects. Days later, on August 5, another robbery of the same modality was recorded in Retiro, where a victim had a backpack with 60 thousand dollars and gold coins valued at 800 thousand dollars stolen. 'The analysis of the GPS and CMU cameras confirmed that the vehicle was also involved in that incident,' they indicated. With the evidence gathered, the National Criminal and Correctional Court No. 46, in charge of Anselmo De Santo, ordered thirteen raids at different points in the City, which resulted in the arrest of five members of the organization and the seizure of ten cars—two of them new—15 thousand dollars, half a kilogram of gold, $600 thousand, 26 cell phones, and 108 9mm caliber cartridges.
